Food For Thought, in Bozeman, Montana, is locally owned and operated by Registered Dietitian, Emily F. Ryan. FFT specializes in creative and healthy foods prepared fresh daily on site, for you to enjoy at home or in our newly expanded cafe. We also offer convenient to-go options for busy individuals seeking a quick healthy meal to enjoy at home or on the run. In addition to our ample display cases filled with fresh foods, Food For Thought bakes fresh bread, pastries, and desserts everyday. Our made-to-order sandwiches are always prepared on our fresh baked breads, making them so very addicting!

Our Food Philosophy is simple; good, clean food. No preservatives, additives, trans-fat, or fried items. We only prepare foods that we would feel fully comfortable serving our own family and friends. As a Registered Dietitian, I will always be more than happy to work with any special dietary needs or food allergies or restrictions that you may have.

The perfect gift for new moms, new neighbors, or providing comfort for the loss of a loved one or for ill family & friends. Our meal packages provide comfort and ease when life gets hectic.

Order off of our casual catering menu or we will customize full meals or entrees to be delivered with freezing, thawing, reheating, and cooking instructions.  Packages can be order for regularly scheduled pick up, delivered in bulk, or all at once.  Please contact FFT directly for more information and pricing.

FFT understands the importance of THE meal on your big day!  Our wedding services are extensive and include, but are not limited to: casual BBQs and cookouts, staffed buffets, varied food stations, heavy hor d’oueuvres , all the way to amazing five course plated dinners! Our staff will tend to every detail including planning, set up, full dinner service, break down and clean up. We even have dish, flatware, & glassware rental services, event planning, food display creation and custom wedding cakes.  In essence, we are “one-stop shopping” for you customized reception.  FFT is familiar with working at many of the rustic, yet stunning venues such as Springhill Pavilion, The Big Yellow Bar, Bohart Ranch and many more locations including the Woodlands, Gallatin River Hideaway and La Petite Chateau. A friend of Emilyʼs writes this: I am a long-time business associate of Emilyʼs, and we sometimes get together to catch up on events, compare notes, and share ideas. We had made arrangements one evening to meet, and I stopped by Food for Thought to accompany her downtown for dinner.

It was well past six, and she was still busy at the counter with staff, reviewing the details of the day, preparing for the next day, getting things done. Emily is no stranger to long hours and hard work, but after 12 hours on the job, Iʼm sure she was looking forward to taking a little rest and relaxation, every bit as much as I was. With a wink and a nod, she pleaded for patience and promised that she needed just one minute more, two at most, and then weʼd be off. I sat to the side and proceeded to witness what I consider to be one of those quintessential Emily moments, a textbook demonstration in the delivery of real customer service.

A couple arrived, very young daughter in tow, and explained they were from out-of town, in the early stages of planning a possible Bozeman wedding; and that someone had suggested they talk with “Emily” at Food for Thought, our townʼs very best caterer. They apologized for the inconvenience - the hour was late and they hadnʼt made an appointment - but asked if Emily herself might be available to help them. It was clear they were not “customers” in any conventional sense. They were simply looking for someone to help and advise.

After welcoming these folks and introducing herself, Emily made them comfortable, truly comfortable, and dedicated the next forty-five minutes to carefully listening and explaining - everything! Menus and costs. Possible venues. Things to do, things to avoid doing. All the details and insights that should be considered in planning an event you hope your guests will enjoy and remember always. It was an absolutely virtuoso performance, both in tone and content, made all the more impressive because it was spontaneous and carried with it very little opportunity for reward. In truth it was no performance at all. It was simply Emily being Emily - knowledgable, charming, professional, helpful, remarkably astute. Iʼve spent many years working hard to keep customers happy. I know how difficult it is to build a business, to capture customers and keep them coming back for more, to organize things so that you can flawlessly deliver on the quality of service promised. I watched Emily open her doors, and I marvel at how in the span of a few short years sheʼs built a company that now sets the standard in her marketplace. I know first hand that what you find when you hire this remarkable young woman goes way beyond the delicious food and spectacular events. Emily herself brings much to the table.


A St. Louis native, Emily Ryan attended Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and graduated with honors from Montana State University with degrees in Political Science and Food Nutrition and Dietetics. She completed a post-graduate Dietetic Internship at Oregon Health and Science University in 2006. Emily opened Food for Thought in 2008.

After completing her training at Le Cordon Bleu, she served on the culinary teams at the renowned Rainbow Ranch in Big Sky, MT, The Dock in Stillwater, MN, and Havana Blue in St. Thomas, USVI. She brings a youthful, creative menu design approach to Food For Thought and crafts distinct plates suited to each specific situation.

What is the best way to contact you with questions or to place orders?

If you have any questions, please call, e-mail, stop by in-person (please avoid the hectic lunch rush between 11:45-1:15), or simply make an appointment and we will be more than happy to answer all of your questions and walk you through placing your order. We do our very best to return all calls and messages on the same or following business day. Please note that we are closed on Sundays, except for off-site catering jobs.

How Do I Place An Order?

Please review our menus on the site, and then either call or e-mail your order. Please let us know:

Once your order has been placed via phone or e-mail, an itemized invoice will be electronically sent to you for review and confirmation. Upon confirmation, the order will be considered finalized and ready for the intended date.

How much notice do I need to give for a catering or special order?

We usually require at least 2-3 days notice for all orders. During particularly busy seasons, more notice may be required (weddings and holidays). In case of an unanticipated event, such as a memorial, we try our best to respond as quickly as we can. In case of a staffed event, we usually require at least one week to ten business days advanced notice.

We do our best to accommodate last minute orders (day of or day before), but at times, depending on head count and menu, we may not be able to meet your desired needs. We often suggest alternative options in these cases, if our kitchen is available to do so.

We try to accommodate all of our customer’s needs the very best that we can. Please note that we are a small owner/operator run business, and at times we may not be able to meet all of your requests, although we will certainly try!

Please keep in mind that we sometimes book up for a particular day and must stop accepting orders. We always recommend placing your order as soon as you decide to use us to cater your event.

Can I change my order once it is placed?

We are usually able to accommodate changes made at least one full business day prior to your event. Please let us know when submitting your order if you are anticipating making any adjustments. Please note we consider all orders final at 3PM the day before the scheduled event date. If we are able to accommodate changes after this deadline, we reserve the right to charge an additional fee or service charge for our time and ingredients as we see fit.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please let us know as soon as possible if you need to cancel your order or event. Orders that are cancelled less than two full business days before the scheduled event date will be charged 100% of the total invoice. This charge is used to cover foods that cannot be used, labor, rental goods and jobs we may have declined in order to accommodate your event.

How do I pay for my order?

You are welcome to pay with cash or check. We require a major credit card to guarantee your order, and this card may be used to pay for your order. If your order is over $500.00, a 3% service charge will be added to your bill to cover our card processing fees. To avoid this charge, please pay via cash or check.

Payment is due at least two days prior to pick up or delivery of your order if paying with a credit card. If paying with cash or check, payment is also due two days before your order OR at the time of the event. Food will not leave the FFT premises without full payment. We are sorry, but we cannot extend any exceptions.

What can I expect when I order from Food For Thought?

All of our food is prepared to order from scratch in our kitchen at FFT, using the highest quality ingredients. Our philosophy is “Good Clean Food.” We use no additives, preservatives, trans fats, or fried items. We are a unique food establishment in Bozeman, where your order can be presented in a variety of different fashions:

How are the items on your menu packages, presented, served etc.?

Our food can be presented in a variety of different fashions depending on your needs, desires, and budget.

If you would like your order to be arranged on FFT’s dish wear with serving utensils, a small rental fee, depending on number and type of pieces will be applied to your order. Average charge is typically no more than $20.00 per meal. All of FFT’s items must be returned within 24 hours, unless other arrangements have been made. If any items are not returned, lost or damage, please note that your credit card will be charged to cover the full price of these items. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Is gratuity automatically added to my order?

This depends on the type of order and services requested. Pick Up catering and/or special orders DO NOT have gratuity added to them. Please tip the kitchen or wait staff as you see fit.
